Narrative Analysis: An Analysis of Evaluative Devices in Chinese JFL Learners’ Oral Narratives

Using the picture book “Frog, where are you?” (Mayer, 1969), this study investigated frequency and linguistic forms of evaluative devices in narratives elicited from 29 Japanese native speakers 28 upper-intermediate Chinese learners Japanese. The findings show that preferred style differed between speakers’ learners’ narratives. On one hand, although provided more than Japanese, ratio clause expression was approximately 2:8 both. other clauses characters’ perspectives to create multiple-voiced discourse, used expressions such as modality value judgments objectify narration. To contrary, mainly information supplements narrating event clauses, durative-descriptive adding expressivity language ensure communication intentions were perceived by audience.
